TWENTY pupils at a Worcester school have been rewarded for their community spirit at West Mercia police's Good Citizen Awards.

The Elgar Technology College pupils were honoured for their school council work as well as helping a city charity.

Eleven pupils are involved in the school council, which has addressed topics including bullying, rewards and sanctions, fund-raising and uniform.

The pupils, from all school years, then report back to their year head.

"We've looked at people's problems and picked up on points are classmates are interested in," said Claire Jones, who is 15 years old.

"It's good to try and help your school and get other people's opinions."

One of the council's successes is changing the look of the uniform.

Pupils are now able to wear polo shirts with the school logo and a new sweatshirt is available. A winter fleece will also be available in the winter.

"The school council is for pupils that have tried hard," said Becky Schofield, also 15.

"It's not about how clever you are but whether you would be helpful."

Nine other pupils recognised by the police work with the Age Concern Lunch Club in Worcester each Wednesday.

The 12 to 14-year-olds help with meals and chat to the elderly members.

"We're really pleased our children are being honoured," said Dr Graham Watts, headteacher at the Bilford Road school.

"It's delightful to know we have such wonderful young people.

"It's very important to recognise young people's achievements in all ways."
