A KIDDERMINSTER computer engineer told a jury that he was "stunned" when police arrested him for child abuse allegedly committed more than 20 years ago.
"It's hard to explain. There was a sense of disbelief. I was absolutely gobsmacked," said Geoffrey Geary.
At Worcester Crown Court Geary, aged 56, of Worcester Road, Kidderminster, denies rape, indecent assault, indecency with a child and buggery. His alleged victim is now in her 30s.
He told the court that he had served in the Army for 30 years, rising to the rank of Warrant Officer. He had enlisted in the Royal Artillery and had been attached to the Army Air Corps with spells in Germany, Norway and Northern Ireland.
He had begun his own computer business after leaving the Army and was "just keeping his head above water." He had been under financial pressure. The case had led to him being treated with anti-depressants.
"Is there any foundation whatsoever for the allegations made?," asked his counsel Bernard Thorogood.
"Absolutely none. I have never touched her in an indecent way," Geary replied.
Cross-examined by Ebrahim Mooncey, prosecuting, he said: "I have no idea why she invented these allegations."
The trial continues.
