THE wartime rations basket publicising Severn Valley Railway's 40s event (Shuttle/Times and News, June 27) contained a bunch of bananas.
As any wartime child would tell you, bananas disappeared from British shops in late 1939 and were not seen again for six years.
There are stories of small children, with no memory of pre-war times, being unsure of how to eat bananas, when the fruit eventually reappeared.
