THEATREGOERS in Stratford are in for a rare treat later this month when award-winning actress Janet Suzman leads a stellar cast in John Barton's production of The Hollow Crown at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre.

Ms Suzman, who started her career in Stratford and has gone on to establish herself as one of the country's foremost stage, film and TV actresses, heads a cast that includes Derek Jacobi. Ian Richardson and Donald Sinden.

She takes over from Diana Rigg, who starred in the production's tour of Australia and New Zealand.

The production, which was first staged in 1961, is an evening of "entertainment and history" based on the kings and queens of England, in which the actors perform extracts from Shakespeare's plays, without fancy costumes and against a simple, stylish backdrop.

"It's a very rare opportunity to see that kind of cast," said Royal Shakespeare Company spokeswoman Nada Zakula.

The production runs at the RST from July 16 to 20, with matinees on the July 16, 18 and 20. These are the only performances in the UK.

Tickets are available from the RSC box office on 01789 403403.
