A NEW piece of sculpture has been unveiled in the grounds of a 19th century stately ruin.

Universal Object, by Benedict Carpenter, is the latest to go on display at Jerwood Sculpture Park, Witley Court. Witley Court custodian Lin Breakwell with the new sculpture.

The unorthodox work won the 2001 Jerwood Sculpture prize to commission an outdoor piece, and it netted its creator £20,000.

The feature, measuring nearly three metres in length, is described as an "ambiguous figurative form" derived from inkblot tests used to trigger associations in the mind.

About 60 entries were submitted and a shortlist of eight artists was drawn up with the commission going to the youngest entrant, Mr Carpenter, 26, who graduated from the Royal College of Art in 1999.

The sculpture park, the first permanent site of its kind in the West Midlands, opened at Witley Court in August 2000.
