THERE is still time for green-fingered gardeners planning to wow judges at this year's Bewdley in Bloom competition to get their entries in.

Judges will be assessing hopefuls in 16 categories on Friday, July 12 and Saturday, July 13.

The official closing date for entries is tomorrow but Bewdley in Bloom committee spokesman Hugh Morgan said the door would not be slammed on anyone who comes forward after this date.

This year sees a new category for the best mobile home surround, offering one of two prizes dedicated to former Bewdley mayor Hilda Peers, who died of a heart attack last year.

"There are a lot of mobile homes in Bewdley and we thought it was about time we did something for them," Mr Morgan said.

Mrs Peers, who was mayor from 1983 to 1985, was instrumental in setting up the competition.

Another new prize this year, a crystal bowl for an entrant who has overcome some kind of disadvantage or disability, is dedicated to her memory.

The top three entries are selected in each of the categories and points awarded depending on placement, with the overall winner the person with most points across the classes.

Entry forms are available from a range of places in the town centre, including the library and the tourist information centre, or by calling Mr Morgan on 01299 405188.
