HEALTHIER times await those taking part in a new walking scheme designed to get unhealthy or convalescing people out and about.

Weekly walks in the Wyre Forest are being staged by the Forestry Commission, which is taking part in "Walking the way to health". walks leader David Mason with Dorothy Hughes, Olive Derricutt, Shirley Silcock, Marie Barker, Diane Edmondson and Ann Link.

The Government scheme, administered by the Countryside Agency, aims to help people with heart problems, patients recovering from operations or anybody who wants to get fit and enjoy the forest.

Three trained leaders guide walkers on two different trails, one flat and one hilly, every Tuesday morning.

"It's a fabulous scheme," said Forestry Commission education officer Rosemary Winnall.

"It's a walk with a purpose. Part of the walk is brisk walking, and all the leaders have been trained to increase heart rate in a safe and correct way."

Mrs Winnall added: "We're trying to link up with medical centres and get information to as many doctors who are in charge of heart problems in local practices who might recommend their patients to come to us."

The Forestry Commission is preparing a bid with Wyre Forest District Council to the Countryside Agency for grants for further initiatives.
