AFTER a net 74 in the first round of the Centenary Cup at Broadway, Jonathon Lyon-Smith, playing off a 17 handicap, romped through the field with a magnificent net 62 (gross 79) to win by four shots from club president Albert Powers with Shaun Thornhill third.
Both Gerry O'Hagan (net 69) and Mike Humpston (70) had good days. However, there was simply no catching Lyon-Smith who struck the ball with the confidence of someone playing off a single figure handicap.
The sartorially elegant Peter May took the honours in the Division One and Two Medal with a crisp net 65 (gross 76) just ahead of Ben Storey who showed a return to form, and a reminder to the League team selectors, with a net 66, gross 72.
Third place went to veteran John Skinner (net 67) with Bob Lord squeezing in at fourth.
Tim Thornley carded a gross 75 which earned him a cut to four, thus enabling him to progress towards turning professional.
CAPTAIN'S Day at the Vale Golf and Country Club saw 136 players in 34 World Cup teams playing a Texas Scramble with the team of Maurice Moore, Alan Klein, Carl Braithwaite and Linda Biggs representing France the victors with a score of 62.1.
Ross Garratt, this year's captain commented: "Flavour of the month was definitely the World Cup so appropriately I decided to keep the theme going for this event."
Unlike their football team, France held on to the end to emerge victors with Maurice Moore bending it better than Beckham, Carl Braithwaite shooting for the pin on sight, Alan Klein going in hard from the rough and Linda Biggs, playing from an offside position - the ladies tee - striking the ball over midfield and straight down the middle!
The climax of the day was the well-attended evening dinner dance and prize giving.
THE ladies of Naunton Downs have reached the fifth round of the Mail on Sunday competition after overcoming Tewkesbury Park.
The team of Bridget McCauley, Lindsay Geddes, Judy Stokes and Deborah Davis found themselves all-square after 18 holes.
A sudden-death play-off ensued and it was left to McCauley to win the hole and the match and book a home date with St Pierre.
Junior member, Henry Keeling, finished in third spot in the net event in the Under-15s section of the Gloucestershire Golf Union competition.
