"MANNERS maketh Man?" Yes, manners do count.
If possible, the front seats of public service vehicles should be left for use by the elderly. Furthermore, young people should always be prepared to surrender their seats to the old.
Also, smiles from people such as bus drivers, shop assistants and receptionists never come amiss.
I suppose it is still a nice gesture for a man to walk on the outside of a lady, although these days there is not very much practical need.
However I disagree with the Phillpott File (Evening News, June 24). I like being called "mate" - such a greeting is homely and friendly.
I see no reason why people who choose to sup their ale in a rather posh environment should expect staff to treat them with added deference.
