Re: Dress Codes. On Friday evening I made a most enjoyable journey from one side of the county to the other.
The weather was warm and the views superb. I was joining my husband for supper after his round of golf in the shadow of the Malvern's. Over the years our village golf society has provided regular pleasant evenings at a variety of venues, when partners join golfers to savour both the food and the day's adventures. I was looking forward to it.
Unusually I could not gain access to the Club House and had to go to the Pro Shop. My enquiry for the visiting golfers was greeted with 'Unfortunately jeans are not allowed in the Club House'. My utter dismay and consternation earned me a further rebuff , 'I know of no club house that does allow jeans'.
The journey back was miserable.
I mused on my sixty-four years on this planet, wondering why this has never happened before in any of the many countries through which I travelled, mostly during my years as Dr Heward, respected university lecturer.
It is time, I concluded, for such stuffy 1950s dress codes to be abandoned. A people code is more appropriate for the 21st Century. 'All members of this club, visitors and members of staff treat each other with dignity and respect. In no circumstances are members, visitors or staff humiliated.'
