A 57-YEAR-OLD Tenbury woman has appeared on a TV chat show and admitted she is still a virgin.

Margaret Austin said that, despite 33 years of marriage, she had never had sex with husband Bill.

Mrs Austin revealed her lifestyle on a show entitled We don't make love any more on BBC1's Kilroy programme, broadcast on Tuesday, June 25.

"I was very nervous about going on the programme, but I felt I had to," said Mrs Austin.

"It was a relief to find other people in a similar situation also speaking out.

"Whenever we tried to make love I could hear my mother's voice telling me that sex was dirty and nasty and I couldn't get it out of my head.

"For 12 years I saw a specialist in Birmingham, who finally diagnosed it as a phobia brought on by my mother's attitude. Bill, my husband, has been wonderful and faithful and we have a good marriage."

She admitted that not having children was "very hard".

"I just hope what I had to say helps other people," she added.

Christine Northam, from Relate, said that sexless marriages were more common than people realised.

"I admire Mrs Austin for speaking out," she said. "However, as far as this couple is concerned, there is still plenty of married life to enjoy."
