A STATELY summer ball held in Hanley Castle raised an astonishing £17,000 for the National Association for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC).
The Upton-upon-Severn branch of the charity staged the biannual event at Severn End, on Saturday, June 22.
The ball was due to have taken place a year ago but was postponed because of foot and mouth.
Voluntary committee chairman Sara Kitching, who said all the money raised would be going to the Herefordshire and Worcestershire branch of the NSPCC, described it as an "unforgettable night".
"We are stunned by people's generosity," she said.
"Everybody involved deserves a huge thank you, especially Nick and Caroline Lechmere who gave their home over to the NSPCC and all the local businesses who supported us by sponsoring a table."
More than 220 people attended the event.
Prize lots at the ball's auction included a bronze statuette which was bought by a London couple for £2,000.
The ladies of the Upton branch committee were also donated by their husbands as a charity "Ground Force" team, raising more than £1,000.
"It's a wonderful result," said Phil Sharpe, of the NSPCC.
Mr Sharpe said that the money would be shared between projects helping sexually abused children and giving advice to those in care homes throughout the Three Counties.
