A TARGET set by Upton-upon-Severn Deanery to raise money for a Kenyan school over a year has been achieved in just six weeks.

A collection held during the jazz festival church service on Sunday (June 30), attended by more than 100 people, raised £1,200. This was divided equally between the appeal and the church.

Together with a faith lunch and auction of promises at Bushley Village Hall on June 16, which raised £852, the collection tipped the appeal over the £5,000 mark.

Rector Chris Hardwick said the fundraising efforts would keep going until next May, to mark a year since they started.

"We've just made £5,200, which in six weeks is a marvellous achievement across the deanery," he said.

"But we're going to go forward with the appeal. We're not going to stop because we have reached the target."

Mr Hardwick paid tribute to the "support and generosity of the jazz festival congregation" and of the other fundraisers who have helped bring the money in, including Upton Primary School.

Anajali School, a newly-established primary school in Kibera, a slum area of Nairobi, will be sent the money to help it replace mud hut classrooms and install toilets.
