HUNDREDS of villagers will tie ribbons to the perimeter fence of the former Throckmorton airfield to protest at Government plans to build a "super camp" for asylum seekers there.

Angry residents will carry placards and attach billboards to the fencing during the demonstration at 12noon on Sunday.

More than 1,000 people have written to the Prime Minister and the Home Office objecting to the scheme, and PACT, the Protest at the Asylum Centre at Throckmorton campaign group, which represents communities around the site has written to every MP, pleading with them to put pressure on the Government.

The proposal has been condemned by refugee welfare agencies, the Red Cross, the Church of England and Human Rights organisations, who say to put a camp for 750 people alongside a village of 160 would mean refugees stranded in a rural backwater with no public services or public transport.

They would be housed close to the biggest landfill site in Worcestershire and a huge foot and mouth burial pit containing 130,000 animal carcasses.

"It would swamp the surrounding rural communities," said PACT spokesman, Rupert Segar.
