I must respond to Mike Dixon's letter (Your Letters, June 28) accusing those who democratically oppose regional government of being "impostors".

This irrational fear of being challenged is not surprising as those who belong to quangos such as the West Midlands Constitutional Convention, which is pushing this agenda, know what they are proposing would be universally unpopular if the truth leaked out.

Yes, UKIP's policy is to oppose (and expose) regionalisation for what it is; the breaking up and re-shaping of British politics along "European" lines. Several UKIP members accepted an invitation to attend an "open debate" to called by Mr Dixon's WMCC but were refused any further access because UKIP "opposed" their views. Is this "democracy in action"?

We would much rather have taken a place around the table but, as democracy had been denied, we formed WMCC Ltd, a shadow group to Mr Dixon's quango. We are currently building support from across the political spectrum.

Our supporters have attended many "public meetings" organised by WMCC and report that the vast majority in the audience are against the replacement of county councils with "rule from Birmingham". Ours is no "front" organisation but one side of a vitally important debate. Unlike our opponents, we receive no funding but are prepared to finance ourselves so people get the full story.

WMCC Ltd have made written and verbal requests to the quango of the same name to debate this issue publicly but we have had no response to date. May we use your pages to re-issue this request because people need to know the truth.

WMCC Ltd can be contacted on 01432 890742.
