MALVERN Library could be the base for a "customer contact centre" for district and county councils if plans now being discussed get the go-ahead.

Worcestershire County Council and Malvern Hills District Council are talking about the creation of a one-stop shop, where people can get in touch with the councils about their services.

If the joint venture is approved by both councils, it could be up and running as early as April next year.

The steering group, comprising members of both councils, has already been in touch with the East Riding of Yorkshire District Council, which successfully operates such centres.

Malvern Hills District Council is currently advertising for a head of customer services, who will play a leading role in the creation and running of the centre. Pay for the post is up to £32,500.

The centre would provide a single meeting place where members of the public could go if they needed to get in touch with council officers.

David Wood, of Malvern Hills District Council, said: "All aspects of our customer services will be accessible through the centre."

In addition to the Malvern centre, "satellite" contact offices are envisaged in Upton-upon-Severn and Tenbury Wells.

Other public bodies, such as parish councils, police and health authorities, may also join the project.

A proposal is due to go before MHDC's executive committee on Tuesday, July 16.

MHDC is also looking for members of the public to join its Customer Panel. Panel members are asked to fill in questionnaires several times a year dealing with the council and its ser- vices.
