KIDDERMINSTER'S Grant Burgess unleashed a powerful finish to stun Channel Islander Angus McKinnon as England stormed to the Home International Bowls title in Worthing last night.
Burgess, from the Gilt Edge club, operated at number three to Torquay's Danny Denison and they fought out a tough battle which saw McKinnon power 5-2 ahead over the first five ends.
But back came Burgess and the teams were all square at 7-7 and 9-9 before McKinnon rallied his rink with two singles to edge ahead 11-9 with seven ends to play. Then Burgess stooped to conquer pinning the islanders against the ropes with a blistering 14 shots on the run-in, capping this charge with two fours to rocket home 23-12.
Collectively, the England team ran riot, demolishing the Channel Islands 183-91 to retain the British Crown, collecting 20 of the 22 points at stake.
The Home International champions finished the series with 72 points, well clear of Wales (48), Scotland (48), Ireland (45) and the winless Channel Islands (7).
