ONE hundred and forty four members competed in the tournament held to mark the opening of the Worcestershire Golf Club's new clubhouse.

The competition was marked by two shotgun starts, the first at 8.30am and the second at 2.30pm. Peter McEvoy, the past Captain of the Great Britain & Ireland Walker Cup team, officially opened the new clubhouse between the two.

The inaugural competition was a four ball Stableford Alliance. The club captain, Mel Stocker, led his team of fellow director Tony Rogers, Worcestershire's Golf Union president Norman Bolton and Mike Houghton into third place with 85 points.

In second place with 86 points was the team consisting of Pete Sheward, Dave Bray, Mike Dowe and Bob Marriot. The winners of the competition with the excellent 87 points were Chris Hardy, John Williams, Paul Yorke and Ron Richardson.

The lady captain Jill Exell led the best ladies team returning a score of 83 points. Kate Foster, June Jones and Janet Clowrey ably supported Jill.

The ladies section has been very busy, although played in very bad weather the Veteran's Cup was won by Heather Morgan with a net 73. The runner up was Veronica Shaw with a net 75.

Forty-eight ladies played in the June medal and AEG competition. Dane Meakin won the Silver division with a net 69. In second place with 70 was June Jones. Ruth Scott with 73 was runner up in the Bronze division where the winner was Judy Vincent with 71.

Three members, Diane Meakin, June Jones and Judy Vincent will now go forward to compete in the AEG competition. Judy Vincent won the Gripper putting competition played alongside the June medal with a score of 28 putts.

In the monthly Stableford competition for those ladies with a handicap of 41 and above Jane Butler was the winner with 27 points. The monthly Extra Medal competition saw Heather Morgan win the Silver division and Veronica Shaw win the Bronze Division.

In the men's June mid-week medal for Division One the first six players all returned par or better figures. Jim Campbell, Wes Curtis and David Harding, all returned a net 69 and the three players could only be separated on count back.

Former club captain, Jim Campbell was third with West Curtis in fourth place and Dave Harding in fifth. Second place in Division one went to former snooker player Dave Finbow with a net 66. The outstanding performance of the day was by Neil Smith who returned a net 64 to win Division One. In Division Two Paul Butler and John Ransford both returned net scores of 72 to win first and second places respectively with Chris Massey in third place with a net 73.

- A PERFECT June day dawned for lady captain Jill Exell when members played in competitions on Lady Captain's Day.

The Captain's Salver was won by Betty Hakes with 41 points, her first ever win. Chris Urry scored 27 for the best gross prize and also had a hole in one on the third winning the nearest the pin prize, a memorable birthday present for her!

Division One winner with 34 points was Janet Long, 2nd Cathy Harris and 3rd Ursula Pearson also with 34 decided on a count back.

Division Two winner with 40 points was Val Burton, 2nd Liz Bird, 3rd Linda Mackie.

Division Three was won by Zena Lloyd with 38 points, her first ever win, 2nd Julia Radley and 3rd Jennifer Butler.

Front nine prize Jos Douglas-Pennant 20 points. Back nine prize Anita Leaver 19 points. Putting competition Kate Foster 31 putts. Senior ladies hole competition Margaret Pike 23 points.

A skills competition followed the full round. Ursula Pearson won the Silver Division and Joan Haworth won in the Bronze Division.

Over the day more than £100 was raised for the Acorn Children's Hospice.
