THE leader of Worcester City Council rolled up his sleeves to help shift tonnes of illegal waste from a country road.
Councillor Stephen Inman began work in Offerton Lane yesterday, where about 200 tons of rubbish are dumped every year.
The council has joined forces with the Environment Agency to deal with the mess, which includes commercial waste, rubbish and washing machines.
Monday's operation is the first by the Fly Tipping Partnership, which has been formed to put a stop to the illegal dumping and catch those responsible.
Once the waste is removed, signs will be put up warning people that tipping is an offence and telling them where rubbish should be taken.
Cameras will also be installed to capture culprits on film with the intention of prosecuting them.
Residents and members of the Worcester-based environmental charity the Duckworth Worcestershire Trust will also be taking part in the clean up operation.
