AN Evesham man has appeared before magistrates charged with 17 offences of cruelty to children at a residential home for boys.
Michael Quinlan, aged 62, made his first appearance in front of Gloucester magistrates yesterday relating to alleged offences while he was at a privately-run school and care home - The Poplars, near Newnham-on-Severn, Gloucestershire.
His appearance is part of a continuing investigation by detectives at Gloucestershire Constabulary, and Gloucestershire Social Services.
Bailed
Appearing briefly in court, Quinlan, of Legion House, Cheltenham Road, Evesham, was bailed until Tuesday, July 23 when he will re-appear at Worcester Magistrates Court charged with a co-defendant.
He was given bail on the conditions that he resides at his home address and does not contact any prosecution witnesses.
The Poplars, though privately run, catered for boys' aged between 10 and 17, who had been place in the care of local authorities and many came from the North West of England.
It is thought that more than 800 boys were at the school during its existence and police are keen to contact anyone who was a resident at the Poplars between 1969 and 1983, or who may have information which may be able to help the investigation.
Anyone with information is asked to called 0845 090 111, between 8am and 4pm from Monday to Friday.
