John Logan is more than a little mixed up about water (Letters, July 3).

The fluoride which occurs naturally in drinking water is calcium fluoride.

The stuff that is used to artificially fluoridate drinking water is not found naturally anywhere on the planet.

It is the waste of the phosphate fertiliser industry - fluorosilicates.

The chemical formula is H2SiF6 and it contains arsenic, lead, cadmium, beryllium, mercury, vanadium, silica and radionuclides.

Two of these contaminants are known human carcinogens and three are neurotoxic.

None has ever been shown to be 'good' for humans and certainly none are known to reduce tooth decay.

Fluoridation should be stopped because it is not possible to control the amount of water people drink.

Your correspondent, Barbara Craig was correct. 'Toxic waste' is an accurate description for the fluoridating agent.
