THE recent exercise by Councillor Thomas, with Alwyn Davies (Environment member) and Transport Manager Chris Pettifer, tested local bus services on Tuesday, June 25.
Their reported findings were that buses were clean, on time and gave value for money. Their only disappointment was low passenger numbers.
As a resident living on the 53 and 54 service route, I regularly observe large buses with low passenger numbers along its Feckenham Road section.
The message could not be clearer - car owners will continue to use their cars in certain areas, even if buses become free and frequent.
The original objective of public transport seems to have been completely lost.
The main aim was to reduce vehicle pollution and congestion.
The over-reaction to cure this problem by swamping the area with buses has now resulted in increased pollution and congestion on some Redditch roads.
Smaller buses on shorter, direct routes, between the bus station and district centres would surely create a better service network than the present large circulating buses covering unnecessary mileage.
