TALENTED youngsters from a Rubery school proved they had the gift of the gab when they took part in a spoken English competition.
Every child from Beaconside First and Middle School in Hazel Road had the chance to take part in the contest, which took place on Thursday, June 27.
Sixteen finalists between the ages of seven and 11, read out a speech, poem and a piece of Shakespeare to the panel of four judges, which included television presenter Sue Beardsmore.
The rest of the panel included assistant deputy head of Waseley Hills High School, Sue Williams, school governor Rev John Barrett and headteacher Reg Moore.
The contest was judged on the contestants' clarity of speech, delivery and expression.
Literacy co-ordinator Lorraine Griffin said: "This is the first time we have held such an event but we hope to do it again next year.
"The children had a thoroughly good time," she added.
