COMPETITIONS organised by Gloucestershire Root Fruit and Grain Society - cancelled last year because of foot and mouth disease - have started again.
Vice-chairman Robin Dale, of Manor Farm, Bourton-on-the-Hill, said entries after a year out were up, with many new members taking part. They begin with the on-farm classes for best farmed farms, followed by livestock classes and arable classes, with root crops judged in the autumn.
New president is Roger Bush, a partner in Bruton Knowles, who will judge the best farm, gardens, and the chairmanship has been taken on by Rob Hewlett, of Boddington Estate. "These two charismatic characters will give a fine lead to a premier agricultural society," Mr Dale said.
Society members Simon and Louise Middle, of Sandhurst, have won the Three Counties Show's Auborn prize for the best farm in the county after being wiped out in March 2001 as a foot and mouth contact.
"They both emerged from that trauma with dignity to start again, and it is of great credit to them to restock and then win this award - no mean feat in under 14 months," Mr Dale said.
