NEWLAND made the trip to Brintons and a shocking display in the field confined them to a 41-run defeat in this WCL Division Five game.
BRINTONS v NEWLAND
Skipper Tolley asked Brintons to make first use of a damp wicket and his side then proceeded to fail to make the best use of the opportunities offered to them.
The third ball saw Jones fend off a vicious Churchill delivery and the ball looped to gully where inexplicably the ball went to ground.
With Brintons making no attempt to score Rouse reeled off seven consecutive maidens whilst Churchill was also unplayable.
Lockwood (18) attempted to up the tempo but he became Rouse's only wicket but his 12 over spell had yielded 1-16. Andy Maiden strode to wicket with his side 47-1 off 24 overs, he put Newland's change bowlers to the sword with a belligerent 42 as the Newland fielders had no idea how to react at a ball hit to them at pace.
Meantime Jones, still shaking his head in disbelief at his earlier let off, followed Maiden's lead and was now finding the boundary.
On Maiden's dismissal for 42 the latter batsmen had licence to bludgeon and they did. Churchill was brought back but he suffered as four more catches went down off his bowling as well as the boundary boards being peppered.
For two balls Newland showed that they had at least two pairs of hands, firstly Freeman took a running tumbling catch to dismiss Colley for 25, next ball wicketkeeper White took off to take a superb diving catch to dismiss Jones for 60 giving Beavan two wickets.
Neil Waldron and Morris smashed 49 off the last five overs as Newland wilted once again and Newland were faced with making an improbable 213.
The true nature of the wicket was put into context when Newland batted. Lee Waldron fired in and had the ball lifting alarmingly as Freeman and Genever were fending the ball from the end of their noses.
Freeman went first but Dave White and Chris Genever withstood this burst to leave Newland at 58 before White holed out for 26 and when Genever, also 26, misjudged a straight one Newland were 69-4.
Skipper Tolley went on the offensive but Newland needed a substantial partnership. Wickets continued to tumble to the Waldron family and the asking rate was at nine an over.
Barry Addison joined his skipper and immediately pinged the ball to all parts, unfortunately his 24 was all too brief. Tolley tried to shepherd the tail to an improbable victory it was all in vain as Newland crashed to 172 all out with Tolley undefeated on 41 but his side 40 runs short. It was a day to forget.
