THE BBC Big Band is booked at Worcester Cathedral later this month, a rather unusual venue for this genre of music.
The acclaimed band will appear alongside a 100-voice chorus from the Worcester Festival Choral Society on Saturday, July 27, to perform a specially commissioned work by Michael Garrick .
The event is being broadcast live on BBC Radio Three, and will be presented by musician and radio presenter Julian Joseph.
Julian said the unusual combination of ensembles and the location should make for an interesting performance.
"When you get that sound it's exciting anyway, so I think in the cathedral it will be very singular," he said.
The nature of the church's acoustics will make the sound resonate far more than in a traditional jazz venue.
"It reverberates with great clarity so one has to tailor the sound one produces to the sound that is being heard," Julian said.
He admitted that being on stage but not performing would be a strange experience for him.
"It's totally weird! I'll just present the show to the radio audience and public.
"I'm looking forward to it, it's a very unusual combination. It's a testament to the fact that jazz musicians are always thinking in these unusual ways."
The concert starts at 7.30pm. Tickets cost from £6, available from the box office on 01905 611427.
