I PRESUME that Della Lewis (You Say, July 4) is advocating socialism.
The socialist experiment has been tried. Were there another attempt at redistributing the world's wealth, the money that Della Lewis would like to see spent on health would quickly be consumed in the bureaucracy of organising it and the military power needed to enforce it.
Inequality may be an unfortunate necessity of living in a world blighted by original sin. However, it's a spur to high aspiration and effort.
In contrast, socialism crushes the human spirit under the weight of state regulation and uniformity.
Although our society may be unequal, there's a consensus that society does have an obligation to care for the health of the poor and disadvantage.
This has been provided primarily through the NHS, though I'm sure that creative minds can come up with other ways of assisting the disadvantaged.
MATTHEW A CLARKE,
