THE Worcestershire Golf Club's A team was in scintillating form in their recent home league match against Kidderminster.
The opening pair of course manager, Graham Wallace and Terry Lloyd proved far too strong for their Kidderminster opponents and returned the team's first win with a resounding six and four victory.
Stuart Bird and Tim Curtis had a closer match. Playing some quality golf Tim and Stuart eventually posted a comfortable two and one win. The club chairman, Terry Smith, playing with Gary Lynes returned a similar win. Andy Dunster and Andrew McClelland, playing excellent golf were far too strong for the Kidderminster pair of Gary Shuck and Paul Simmonds. Andy and Andrew had a comfortable win by six and five. Veteran golfer Francis Bird, playing with Andy Greene, completed a six matches to nil win for the club finishing their match two up.
The Millennium Team trophy played on the day of the World Cup final naturally drew a small field of entries. The competition introduced two years ago to celebrate the Millennium is competed between teams of any four golfers with the best two scores to count on each hole. This year the team with a clear victory was Nigel and Corinne Mills playing with Larry and Janet Long. This team were in excellent form and returned a net score of 65.
In the second round of the Ted Evans Centenary Stableford Competition excellent scores were returned particularly in Division One. In fifth place returning a score of 38 points (two points above par) was Pete Sheward. Fourth place went to Phil Dance who returned a score of 39 points while Terry Lloyd came third with a score of 40 points. Carl Bayliss who must have thought he had won the competition played excellent golf to return with a score of 41 points. However Carl had to be satisfied with second place.
Playing off a handicap of five and returned with the amazing Stableford score of 45 points was former club captain Stuart Bird. Stuart won the Division One competition by four clear points.
In Division Two the first four players all played to par or better. Paul Butler and John Daly vied for third place each returning with 36 points. Paul had to be content with fourth spot as John Daly had the better back nine score. In second place with 37 points was John Duncan. Taff Morgan was the clear winner of Division Two returning a score of 39 points.
In Division Three Ron Richardson and Ian Reynolds both returned scores of 36 points. On the count back system Ron was declared the winner having a better back nine score than Ian Reynolds. In third place with a score of 35 points was Peter Davies.
In the Ladies' section the winner of the Peg Evans Centenary cup was Cathy Harris with a Stableford score of 38 points. Barbara Wilkinson was second with 37. Former lady captain Helen Irwin won the Senior Ladies' Twelve Hole Stableford competition.
Twenty four grannies entered the Grannies Cup. Playing high quality golf throughout her round Liz Bird was the winner returning a net 69. Jos Douglas-Pennant came second.
The winner of the Silver Division of the extra medal returning a net 70 was Mary Horobin. The runner up was Diane Meakin with a net 74. Sandra Schofield won the Bronze Division with a net 69, Ruth Scott came second with a net 72.
