AN heroic eight-year-old who saved his mum's life when a fire broke out in their home has been given an award by firefighters.
Plucky Damien Smith was presented with a certificate and bravery award by Kidderminster Fire Brigade Station Officer Steve Fellows.
"We had the presentation in celebration assembly where we present certificates for academic achievement and behaviour," said Marcia Palmer, headteacher at Harvington CE First School.
"But this presentation was really special."
In March this year, Damien raised the alarm when a fire broke out in their home on Leys Road, Harvington, near Evesham.
Damien managed to get his choking mum out of the house moments before the water tank exploded in the heat.
A few days before the fire Damien had been at a school presentation of fire safety by firefighters.
"It goes to show that children really do listen carefully," said Mrs Palmer, after the ceremony yesterday.
"And in this case he saved his mother's life.
"We are really proud of Damien."
