PENNY the labrador will be treading the boards with more than 70 youngsters in a new production of the musical, Annie.
The popular show is being staged by Worcester Operatic and Dramatic Youth Section and opens at the city's Swan Theatre later this month.
Although the musical features so many talented children it was the search for the dog which proved more complicated.
"Actually WODYS has had a rather rough time finding a dog," said producer David Humphries.
"We had a couple of leads which eventually came to nothing.
"But now we have a lovely dog with a very good temperament and she adores children."
Overjoyed
The star of the show, nine-year-old Anna-Julia Grinnell was overjoyed when 12-year-old Penny turned up for the first rehearsal.
"She's really sweet. And she'll do what I say, as long as I have a biscuit in my hand.
"Although I'm not really used to dogs. We have a Siamese cat at home."
Annie is at The Swan Theatre from Tuesday, July 30 to Saturday, August 3.
Evening performances start at 7.30pm and a matinee will be held on Saturday.
