A DROITWICH driver has moved to within touching distance of claiming a major championship after double success last weekend.
Richard Hay has moved into second place in the Autosport Caterham Eurocup after collecting a pair of strong finishes in the Dutch rounds of the championship at Zandvoort.
Last Friday, the 37-year-old qualified his Hay Fisher-backed Superlight in third place on the grid and battled through to second in the first of the weekend's races behind Dunfermline's Barry Horne.
But, starting from third on the grid, Hay found it difficult to get past Chris Cooper in second and had little chance of catching the leader.
By the fall of the chequered flag, Horne had stretched to a 5.7 second advantage over Hay, with Cooper, suffering from handling problems, a further second adrift in third.
Last Saturday's fourth round saw Hay collect third place after a tense late-race duel with German Joachim Westermann.
Hay is now on 61 points in the Eurocup, 17 behind leader Horne.
The fifth and sixth rounds of the Autosport Caterham Eurocup take place at Dijon, in France, in mid-September.
