I READ with interest news about the Lychgate development. It's a very welcome project and about time the 60s monstrosity disappeared.
Sad though it is to see Russell & Dorrell going, surely it was even sadder when the then council destroyed the original and historic Lychgate.
I trust the development will also see the end of the Giffard Hotel.
How could that ever be said to blend with the Cathedral? It would be a very good thing if, after the Lychgate development, the developers turned their attention to that other city centre disaster, the technical college. I suggest the college should share an out-of-city site with the Sixth Form College and the University which says it needs to expand.
All educational facilities on one site would be a lot cheaper to run. Prime sites in the city could then be developed in the interests of the city. The old police station could make a very good apartment block for instance.
