AN American flag, which was flown at Ground Zero, New York, after the September 11 terrorist attack, has been presented to a leading Worcester firefighter.

The Stars and Stripes was handed over after leading firefighter Dave Smith helped raise money for the families of the New York firemen who died in the tragedy.

Mr Smith, of Worcester's Red Watch, helped organise a collection in Hereford and Worcester after the World Trade Centre disaster.

The flag will be on display at Worcester Fire Station's open day, which takes place this Saturday between 10am and 4pm.

"A total of £161,000 was raised for the families," said fire brigade spokesman Alec Mackie.

"David O' Dwyer, chief fire officer, and Mr Smith went to New York and presented a cheque of this money to the head of the New York Fire Department earlier this year."

The department sent Mr Smith the Stars and Stripes as a thank you to the people of Hereford and Worcester for their efforts.
