MEMBERS of SKI claim the defeat of the burner is good news not just for Kidderminster but for two counties.

And they are hoping Worcestershire County Council will switch its attention from burning to recycling following the dismissal of the appeal.

Spokesman Brian Jordan was pleased planning inspector Ken Smith had backed residents and county councillors in rejecting the £40 million burner.

He said: "This is obviously great news for Kidderminster but it can also be good news for all the people of Herefordshire and Worcestershire, as hopefully it will now force the waste authorities into dealing with the problem in a correct manner - making it easy and convenient for the public to sort their waste into different types and collecting it."

He called upon the county council to consult "major stakeholders - that is the public" - rather than put the job in the hands of "private companies whose interest is in making profits for their shareholders".

Mr Jordan also feels the decision can have far-reaching consequences and be "the start of something good in helping to stop the incinerator industry dealing with our resources in this primitive fashion".
