A MAN who cheated an 89-year-old out of £4,000 has been warned that he can expect a "substantial" jail sentence.

Roody Smith, 23, of Trimpley Lane, Shatterford, was given a cheque for work he carried out on the pensioner's drive, Worcester Crown Court heard.

But he altered it and drew £4,000 from the Halifax bank.

He admitted stealing the cash and the case was adjourned for a pre-sentence report.

Remanding him in custody, Judge David McEvoy said Smith should expect "a substantial period in custody".
