At the July meeting numbers were taken for a group walk, flower arranging, and gardening talk.
A report was given on the group's Jubilee Celebration Evening, organised by Margaret Johnson at Astley Village Hall.
Canon Geoffrey Brown gave a talk on his 11 years as incumbent at St Martin-in-the-Fields, Trafalgar Square, London. He gave a brief history of the church designed by James Gibbs, which looks like a Greek Temple with a steeple. The acoustics are excellent so it is used for concerts and outside broadcasts. The church is now used as a drop-in centre for the homeless but is also used by royalty and celebrities. The crypt restaurant opens to aid charitable work.
Canon Brown witnessed bomb scares, demonstrations, royal pageants and carnivals from his vicarage window and related memories, of eccentric people he had met and services, such as one complete with animals.
The next meeting, on August 12, will be organised by members.
