U3A: Once again we had an excellent speaker at the last meeting in the Public Hall in Evesham on Thursday, July 4, given by Paul Oppenheimer, entitled from Belsen to Buckingham Palace. This was a very tragic and indeed a traumatic, yet for the listener a fascinating, story, delivered by Paul Oppenheimer in a very dispassionate and completely unbiased tone and a certain sense of humour, describing his life during the Nazi years in Germany. He arrived in England at the end of 1945 to start a new life, and for Services to Industry he received an MBE in 1990. Paul Oppenheimer is now retired and is using his time to make his life story accessible to as many young people as possible.
CSRF: The meeting held on July 9 was well attended although the weather was off-putting. Mrs Innes, chairman, welcomed everyone and read out several apologies for absence, mainly due to holidays. There was no other business.
The speaker this month was John Fletcher who spoke movingly and enthusiastically about the work of the Lung Cancer Foundation and of the very considerable fund-raising for the charity by Roy Castle, a truly great performer. Please note there will be no meeting in August. The next meeting will be at the library on September 10 when Nicholas Clark will talk about 'Travel around Texas'.
