Careful consideration is to be given regarding the speed limit, where 30mph might be beneficial for the centre of the villages of Corse and Staunton, Coun Richard Padfield, vice-chairman, reported at the bi-monthly meeting of Corse Parish Council, which he chaired in the absence of Coun Pat Lewis through illness. She was wished a speedy recovery. A letter had been received from Robin Peacey, district surveyor, following the council's concern and it was stated that a study had been carried out of the whole of the A417 a few year ago.
The clerk Norman Davis informed members that the postal address is now Corse effective from early June. The clerk was thanked for his work regarding it. Request for donations were received from Corse & Staunton Playing Field who want to buy additional equipment for the play area and for the playing field maintenance, also by Staunton & Corse Church of England School for a donation toward the building extension.
Some thought was given to the co-option of a member to fill the vacancy left by the resignation of a member.
The clerk explained the new audit format for annual financial assessment. Planning matters - Staunton & Corse CE School extension to existing classroom has been approved.
They are back, those intrepid mountain climbers from Corse, Bert Moffat and Jean Cresswell, and whilst many dream of a holiday in Cornwall or the Costa Brava, Bert and Joan don't just dream they get up and go - this time scaling the heights of Kilimanjaro, in N Tanganyiko, Africa. They reached the summit of the glacier covered mountain at 19.300 ft and accomplished it in just six days with no ill-effects such as mountain sickness.
There were nine people in the party that they joined and as they walked through the rain forest Jean said the smells were unforgettable. Forty porters went on ahead carrying heavy loads including tents, cooking equipment and food and when they reached each base the tents etc were already up and the meals, very good, cooked by the chef. There were also six guides with the party. The climbers slept by day and climbed by night and the sunrise was unbelievable. The final lap took six hours, the whole ascent five days. Two of the party failed to make it to the top after becoming ill and had to be taken down the mountain, the other seven made it but extreme caution was needed for the descent with the ground very loose underfoot and they needed to use poles.
Bert had been preparing the climb since January and they said they would never have done it without training and here they found the Malvern Hills helped them tremendously.
This was the second sponsored climb they have made in support of little Jasmin Heaps whose mother is a Corse school friend of Bert's daughter Hazel. Jasmin is suffering from a very rare genetic condition called Sanfilippo and will need special conditions to try to give her a better quality of life. They have already raised over £600 when they climbed the four highest peaks in the British Isles, this was a much greater challenge and we congratulate their achievement. It is still not too late to make a donation just ring Jill Bates on (01452) 840015 or Lucy Houldey on (01452) 700324, they will be pleased to give details.
