FORTHAMPTON & District Royal British Legion. A joint meeting of the branch and women's section was held on Monday, July 8. The chairman K I B Yeaman welcomed the members and asked F Remmer, the branch president, to say the exortation. Apologies for absence were accepted. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and passed. Matters arising - the coffee morning held at Bushley was again a success, the total raised was £406. The chairman thanked all the members and helpers for their effort. Treasurer's report, G Moss said the bank balance was very healthy even after cheques had been made out for the Poppy Appeal and Women's Section. After discussion F Remmer proposed and G Moss seconded that donations be given to the County Mobility Scheme and Somerset Legion House, carried. F Remmer as branch delegate gave a report on the national conference held at Bridlington. Altogether there were 33 motions debated of these 20 were passed and 13 rejected. Of these the main one was affiliation fees. There was one proposal and three amendments and after votes taken it was carried that the annual affiliation fee for ordinary and associate member be increased to £10 from October. The chairman thanked F Remmer for his report. Correspondence and circulars were read out and dealt with. Certain items were highlighted including items to various events, interested members to contact the secretary after the meeting. A letter of thanks from Major John Hawthorntwaite, national vice-president, for the sponsorship the branch sent towards his Bike to Brussels which had raised over £10,000 and more to come in. This is towards the new Royal British Legion home at Weston-Super-Mare. The chairman then gave a talk on The Battle of Isandhlwana, which took place in the Zulu War of 1879. The talk was very interesting, the regiment that took part was the then 24th which was altered to the South Wales Borders. Lt Col A Sharpe, branch vice-president served during his service with this regiment. F Remmer thanked the chairman for his talk. Any other business, Remembrance Sunday, November 10 at Bushley at 3pm. Members are also invited to Tirley Church for 11am. Wreaths to be ordered from B C Greenwood. The annual supper dance will be held on Friday, September 20 at Bushley Village Hall. Tickets £7.
