MY son and daughter visit the skatepark in Victoria Park several times during the school week and every day during the holidays, as do many others. The skatepark is very popular.

I was saddened to read your front-page article in the Malvern Gazette (June 28). The article indicated that local residents were considering legal action over the noise nuisance caused by users of the skate park and plan to get it shut down.

We have spent many an hour with our children at the skatepark and can confirm there is a minority of young adults who cause a nuisance in their cars, revving engines, playing their stereos loudly etc. We do sympathise with the residents over this matter, but in general these young adults don't actually use the skate park, they just seem to "hang out". Surely limiting vehicular access into the park could easily cure this.

There is a mini culture at the skatepark, in the main the skaters at the park are considerate and polite, the older skaters help the younger skaters learn new skills. When its busy everyone takes turns without confrontation and if anyone has a spill the others look out for them.

Children do make a lot of noise when they are playing. Wouldn't you expect this living next to a park designed for children to play in? I guess modern technology will allow some sort of sound arresting barrier to be installed but at what cost? There are very few places in Malvern for children to meet and play and as far as I am aware nowhere else to skate safel. What will all the children do if the skatepark closes?

Let's not allow the minority spoil it for the majority, I sincerely hope the council's environmental and leisure committee will find a solution to the problem.
