I REFER to We Say (Monday, July 8). Of course, success in sport should be suitably acknowledged and rewarded. At the same time let us remember that in halcyon bye-gone days the importance lay in taking part in sport, not necessarily in winning.

The generous Wimbledon crowd, always sympathetic to the under-dog, quite rightly greeted David Nalbandian's courageous breaking of Hewitt's service, with great acclaim.

Hypothetically, I envisage an occurrence some time in the future. Worcester City are drawn away to Manchester United in the FA Cup. United run in a dozen, City, one flukey goal in reply. Would not that fluke deserve greater applause than any of United's 12.
