IT is with great sadness that I learn about the demise of Russell & Dorrell; sorrow mixed with anger as I read that Top Estates plc seems to have forced the shop to close.
Worcester families have patronised this business for generations. When this is swept away, all we will be left with are the ubiquitous chain stores which ones finds in any city centre.
Does diversity and tradition mean nothing? Worcester will be very much the poorer without this great store.
I hope that the people of Worcester will join me in thanking the Dorrell family for maintaining a great retail tradition for so long.
Is there some sort of civic honour that can be bestowed on the current representative of the family?
A very sad day indeed - I am very sorry, Mr Dorrell.
JOHN WEDGWOOD POUND,
Hamilton Road
