PLANS to turn a newts' breeding ground in Worcester into a local nature reserve are to be considered by city councillors.

Lyppard Grange Ponds has already been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and is a candidate for status as a Special Area of Conservation.

The two ponds are home to more than 200 great crested newts and are regarded as among the best breeding grounds in England and Europe.

Now, members of the city council's planning committee are being asked to consider proposals to declare the area as a local nature reserve.

A report by planning officers states that this will secure protection for the area as a wildlife habitat and public open space.

If members support the proposals at their meeting this Thursday they will then be put forward to the Cabinet.

The city council can use its powers under the National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act 1949 to declare the area a local nature reserve - this requires a formal, sealed declaration.

Officers have recommended that a public consultation meeting be held to ensure that there is full community involvement.

The ponds could become a local nature reserve by autumn of this year.
