A VEHICLE amnesty to rid Redditch streets of abandoned cars has proved such a success, plans for another one have already been mooted.
Between June 24 and July 5, 200 unwanted cars were removed and scrapped for free as part of a joint initiative between police, the fire service and Redditch Council called Operation Fire-Safe.
The project was set up to tackle the high number of arson attacks on abandoned cars.
The council declared a vehicle amnesty and police led a massive billboard advertising campaign, taking it to schools and "hotspot" areas.
Unwanted cars usually cost £60 to scrap but through the use of a hotline, residents were able to have their cars disposed of for free.
The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency will crush the 200 cars tomorrow.
A mobile crusher will be taken to Arrow Valley Park, where the cars will be squashed into cubes before being taken away, shredded and the metal recycled.
Dealing with dumped cars costs the council and Worcestershire County Council more than £50,000 a year.
