DEAR EDITOR - We are forever being told what a wonderful invention CCTV is, and how its installation in the town centre has reduced crime.
Can you explain to me how it prevented three men being attacked in Bromsgrove High Street on July 1?
Surely having a policeman on patrol would have stopped this crime from happening in the first place? I cannot believe that it is much consolation to the victims to know that PC Plod, safe and warm back in the police station, with his feet up and a cup of coffee, has a blow-by-blow account of the crime on his video recorder.
I understand that CCTV is being equally useless in the search for Millie Dowler of Walton-on-Thames. We have heard stories this week of faulty and poorly sited equipment failing to record events.
We need the bobby back on the beat. Detection is a poor second to prevention.
J Thomas,
Barrington Road,
Rubery.
