YOUNGSTERS from an established Rubery playgroup celebrated months of hard toil and soil with the successful harvest of their vegetable patch.

Green-fingered children at The Village Nursery (Rubery), Rubery Youth and Community Centre, planted potatoes and peas in flower pots last September.

They carefully nurtured the veggies and have enjoyed a meal of their tatties, peas and fish fingers to celebrate the end of term and their gardening triumph.

The New Road nursery has been running for 20 years and has now closed for the summer holidays.

It takes up to 20 children, aged three to school age, and has recently increased its number of morning sessions from three to five. It has also revealed plans for a mother and toddler group on Wednesday afternoons.

Sessions cost £4 each for families not claiming child care benefits and all profits are pumped back into the nursery.

Ofsted inspectors awarded the nursery 100 per cent in their last report, according to the charity's treasurer Mike Perrott.
