CAMPAIGNERS fighting the Throckmorton airfield asylum camp plan have turned to Worcester residents for vital help.

County councillor Liz Tucker has asked St Peter's Parish Council to put the PACT action group's newsletter in the St Peter's News Link magazine in a bid to encourage Worcester people join the fight.

"Worcester is the nearest town and Worcester has not woken up to the fact that this is something that will effect us all," the PACT chairman told parish members.

The planning application for the 750-place asylum centre - which is being opposed by hundreds of villagers from surrounding communities - will not be submitted to Wychavon District Council until September.

Trauma

Coun Tucker said the people of Throckmorton had still not recovered from the trauma of the foot-and-mouth burial site the previous year.

"We're clear that, not only is this wrong as an asylum seekers centre, it's wrong for the asylum seekers themselves. We're asking for help from you with a number of things."

She urged Worcester residents to write to PACT and other interested parties, explaining why they believed the siting was flawed.

"We're fund-raising because we're now going to have a big legal battle on our hands," she added. "We've raised up to £10,000."

After the meeting, she said that using the News Link magazine meant PACT would not have to bear the cost of producing newsletters.

The parish council agreed to put out PACT letters in News Link in the future.
