MOTORSPORT: Bewdley's Matt Barker still leads the Peugeot 205 Challenge by two points after recovering from a crash in Swansea Bay.

Barker and co-driver Steve Worton were unhurt after their car slid wide on a corner in the final stage, rolled over and landed on its side.

The duo, helped by a spectator, managed to get the vehicle back on its wheels and finished the event for much-needed points.

Barker has the lead over West Midlands Motorsport team-mate David Crossen who destroyed his car after crashing out spectacularly.

The third team member, Bewdley teenager Ben Colley racing in the expert class, suffered technical problems which slowed him in the third stage.

Barker had settled in well among 48 Peugeots over four special stages of the South Wales forest.

He was well inside the top 10 runners in his first forest race and his confidence grew as many favourites went out of the competition.

But his win-or-bust gamble went wrong and ended in the crash just 1.5 miles from the end though he still finished sixth in his class.

Barker said: "I was running third overall when the crash happened. My first forest race was always going to be tough but I don't think that will affect the way I approach the next one.

"It was a fairly slow roll, not a high-speed incident, but it was unfortunate where we ended up. We had no windscreen or windows afterwards and had to drive back to Swansea like that!"

The championship moves to the Welsh forest complex of Sweet Lamb, near Aberystwyth, on September 15.
