TWO match-winning innings without being dismissed by John Martin have earned him the Evening News/Duncan Fearnley Cricket Sales Ltd Cricketer of the Week award.

The 35-year-old struck an unbeaten 85 to help Cookley seconds beat Evesham followed by 114no to defeat Lye in a rearranged fixture.

Martin's hundred was his second of the season and came two months after his first ever ton for Cookley in May against Evesham.

The middle-order batsman first played for Cookley as a 12-year-old but had to endure a 23-year wait to reach the magical hundred mark.

However, he has been in a rich vein of form for Cookley this season with just one failure to his name.

Sunday's century included 20 fours and two sixes and was made with a bat that one team-mate described as firewood.

"The bat is all taped up and before I went out one young lad said I should bin it because it was firewood but it worked pretty well for me," he said.

"The game against Evesham was a rain reduced affair and because we needed to get runs quickly I opened the innings and just had a bit of a bash and we knocked the runs off in 15 overs."

Martin chipped in with two wickets along with fellow bowler Simon Anderson, before he and opener Paul Cartwright (25) overhauled Evesham's target of 116-4 in 15.2 overs.

The following day Lye were on the receiving end of Martin's big-hitting as they overhauled their target of 192-5 reaching the total with 14 overs to spare.

"Against Lye I went in at number five and just carried on my form from Saturday," said Martin.

His exploits were good enough to earn him £40 vouchers towards replacing his 'firewood' bat, to be spent at Duncan Fearnley Cricket Sales Ltd at Unit 10 Sherriff Street, Worcester.
