TEENAGERS who proved the perfect catch for each other celebrate 75 years of marriage - arguably the district's most enduring union - on Saturday.

Brummies Albert and Alice Harris - who met at a cricket match - are now residents at Cambrian House in Kidderminster's Chester Road North.

"I was playing cricket in Highgate Park in Birmingham, and Alice caught the ball," said Albert, 96.

"We used to go to the pictures a lot. Our favourite films were The African Queen, which was absolutely beautiful, and Casablanca."

The couple moved to Stourport eight years ago to be near their son Jim and daughter-in-law Mabel.

"We loved the town and had a very pretty cottage next to a pub," Albert added.

Alice, 95, a wire weaver, and her husband, who worked as a brass polisher for 50 years, had a lucky escape when Birmingham was being bombed by the Luftwaffe.

One night they decided not to go to the air raid shelter because their son was ill. The shelter received a direct hit and many of their neighbours died.

The couple also have a daughter, Betty, six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Buckingham Palace has said the couple will receive a telegram from the Queen - their fourth - to mark the occasion.
